Titans forge split on final day in Florida

LEESBURG, Fla.--The Westminster College softball program closed out its week-long run at THE Spring Games Friday with an afternoon split. Edgewood College rolled to a 10-2 (5 inn.) win in the first game at the Sleepy Hollow Complex before the Titans dispatched Suffolk University Boston 6-2 in the late game. 

Westminster returns home with a 5-5 record. The Titans are scheduled to host non-conference rival Hiram College Saturday, March 16. The opening pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. 


Game 1: Edgewood 10, Westminster 2 (5 inn.)
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead before the Titans scratched out a run in the top of the second after junior designated player Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) led off the second with a walk and junior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) followed up with a single. Meholick scored on a double steal with one out. Edgewood batted around in the bottom of the inning, with Olivia Hebert's two-run single and Jenna Sanchez's bases-clearing double keying the nine-hit, eight-run inning. 

After watching the first four batters reached on base hits to start the fifth, fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) drilled an RBI single that scored freshman Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington). Meholick hit into an inning-ending triple play to end the game. 

Edgewood outhit Westminster 12-7. 

Junior outfielder Danielle Teasdale (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) went 2-for-3. Sophomore Lenina Ebert (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) delivered a pinch hit single in the fifth. Senior Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) dropped to 3-2 this spring with the loss. She allowed 10 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits with a walk in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Emma Redlinger (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper St. Clair) allowed one hit and three walks in 2.1 relief innings. 

Elizabeth Malarski improved to 2-0 in the circle, allowing two runs (2 earned) on seven hits with four walks in five innings of work. Sanchez finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. 


Game 2: Westminster 6, Suffolk 2
Westminster came out hot against Suffolk with the first five batters reaching and the Titans plating four first inning runs. Malczak had a run-scoring double followed by Latess' two-run double and an RBI single by Meholick. In the second, sophomore center fielder Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) scored on a passed ball after leading off the inning with walk and Malcak followed with another run-scoring base hit. Suffolk scratched out its two runs in the fourth with Ella Turnbull's RBI double and Ashley Hubner scoring on a two out wild pitch. 

Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) evened her record at 2-2 this spring in the circle. She allowed two runs (2 earned) on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts in six innings. Junior Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley) struck out one in a perfect seventh inning. Malczak finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Latess went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. 

Turnbull led Suffolk offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Lily Newhall took the loss, allowing six runs (6 earned) on six hits with two walks in 1.1 innings.
