Titans take two against Hiram

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball team opened the home portion of its 2024 schedule Saturday with a pair of victories over non-conference rival Hiram College. The Titans rallied for a 3-2 game one victory before registering a 5-3 win in game two.

Westminster, now winners of three straight, improved to 7-5 with Saturday's two wins. Hiram fell to 5-7 overall.

The Titans will travel to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Wednesday. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.

Game 1: Westminster 3, Hiram 2
Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) snagged her third win of the season in Saturday's game one win. She allowed two runs (2 earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts in the complete-game effort. She also went 1-for-2 with a walk. Fifth-year Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. She owns a 10-game hitting streak. Freshman left fielder Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) was 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

Seven different players had hits for Hiram. Kylie Perez and Angel Santellan both had doubles while Danielle Robles swiped a pair of bases. Darian Kanno suffered the loss in relief of starter Trinity Meza, allowing two runs (2 earned) on four hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Meza surrendered one run (1 earned) on a hit and a walk with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Trailing 2-1 after two innings, Westminster scored twice in the fifth to grab a 3-2 lead. With one out, Jones doubled and scored on a Hiram throwing error before Latess' RBI double scored Malcak, who reached on an error. Brown allowed just three baserunners after the Terriers' second inning run.

Game 2: Westminster 5, Hiram 3
Senior starter Liz Malczak's (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) two-out single got things going in the first. She scored a batter later on a Latess double. Junior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) doubled in Latess later in the inning. Hiram tied the game in the fifth on Perez's two-out, two-run double down the right field line. Haven Papineau and Viviana Macias both scored after singling earlier in the inning. The Titans tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Sophomore Ellie Hsieh (York, Pa., Central York) was the fourth-straight batter to reach in the inning and her RBI single scored freshman pinch runner Cheyenne Burgos (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park), who entered after sophomore second baseman Emily Watts (Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell) was hit by a pitch. With one out and bases loaded Malczak was hit by a pitch and Latess drew a walk to up Westminster's lead to 5-2. Perez delivered a two-out, run-scoring double in the seventh for the Terriers.

Malczak improved to 4-2 in the circle after allowing three runs (3 earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in the complete game. Jones, Hsieh and Latess had two hits apiece. Latess finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored while Jones went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Santellan took the loss, allowing five runs (5 earned) on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Perez finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBis. Macias went 2-for-3 with a run.
