Titans earn gritty win in home opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) surpassed 100 career points in Tuesday's 12-10 matinee victory over Adrian College at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster improved to 2-1 with Tuesday's win while Adrian fell to 1-2. The Bulldogs received votes on last week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)/Blatant Lacrosse Coaches Division III Poll.

Jones, the eighth player in program history to reach 100 career points, finished with five points on four goals and an assist and now has 102 points in 35 career games, tying Boyd Foster (2020-23) for sixth all-time among program leaders.

Senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca) had a goal and three assists while sophomore attack Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) scored three goals and senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) had a pair of goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) scored a goal and freshman midfielder Grady Tierney (Clear Lake Shores, Texas, Houston Christian) assisted on Page's first quarter goal to register his first career point.

Senior Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) totaled seven ground balls and went 16-of-25 from the faceoff X. Junior long-stick midfielder Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) finished with five ground balls to go along with a goal and an assist. It was McGuinness' first goal since scoring in a 20-7 league win at Franciscan University last March. Clark and senior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) each had four ground balls. Junior defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) finished with three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.

Sophomore Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) made 15 saves in his first career start. He also had two ground balls.

Michael Jonas led Adrian with five goals. Brandon Hoerauf and Jake Coakley each had two goals and an assist. Steven Martin finished with five ground balls and won 8-of-19 faceoffs. Cameron Reed totaled four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sam Spangler stopped 18 shots.

Up 3-1 after one quarter, Sentz's man-up score with 24 seconds left in the second gave the Titans a 7-3 lead going into halftime. Jonas' back-to-back goals two-plus minutes into the third trimmed Westminster's lead to two, 7-5, but Clark's man-up goal with under six minutes left in the quarter pushed the Titans' lead to 8-5. Leading 9-6 after three, Coakley and Jones traded goals early in the fourth before Alec Winegar's goal with just over 12 minutes remaining cut Westminster's lead to two, 12-10. Jonas netted back-to-back goals to tie the game at 10. Jones' man-up goal with under six left proved to be the eventual game-winning score. Page added an insurance goal with under five to play.

Westminster had 19 successful clears on its 20 attempts and scored on three of its five extra-man opportunities.

Westminster hosts SUNY Brockport Saturday at 1 p.m.
