Westminster splits on Day 2

LEESBURG, Fla.--The Westminster College softball team forged a split Monday at THE Spring Games. The Titans dropped a 4-1 decision to Wittenberg University in the opener before logging a 9-1 five-inning run rule win over Neumann University.

Monday's games were both played at the Sleepy Hollow Complex.

Westminster returns to action Tuesday at the Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont against Lebanon Valley College (9:15 a.m.) and Gordon College (1:45 p.m.).

Game 1: Wittenberg 4, Westminster 1
Scoreless after three innings, Wittenberg had its first four hitters reach in the fourth to emerge with a 3-0 lead. The Tigers added another run in the top of the sixth before junior center fielder Sydney Lokay's (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Fifth-year first baseman Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) reached base twice after working a walk in the fourth and singling in the sixth. Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) took the no-decision for the Titans. She worked three scoreless innings and allowed one walk while striking out a pair. Lokay took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs (3 earned) on two hits in one relief inning. Sophomore Emma Redlinger (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper St. Clair) threw three relief innings, allowing one run (0 eared) on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Kira van Ravensberg picked up her first win of the year, allowing one run (1 earned) on two hits with three walks and strikeout in five innings.

Game 2: Westminster 9, Neumann 1 (5 inn.)
After falling behind by a run in the first, Latess' two-out, run-scoring double in the third tied the game before the offense batted around and erupted for an eight-run fourth inning. Senior Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) and Lokay each delivered two-run singles in the fourth. Malczak evened her record in the circle 1-1 win the victory, allowing one run (1 earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three innings. Freshman Riley Salazar (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) worked scoreless fourth and fifth innings for the Titans. Lokay went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Nine players had hits for Westminster.

Ashlynne Scardino was saddled with the loss for Neumann after allowing eight runs (7 earned) on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout in 3.1 innings.
