Westminster splits with Allegheny

Gibbons terrific in game one victory

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team split a doubleheader with Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Allegheny College Friday afternoon. Buoyed by a terrific start by junior righty Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln), the Titans rolled to a 3-0 game one victory before suffering a 12-0 (8 inn.) run-rule loss to the Gators in game two.

Westminster is 7-11 overall and 2-2 in the PAC. Allegheny entered Saturday's doubleheader riding a six-game winning streak. The Gators are now 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Westminster will travel to Thiel College Wednesday for a conference doubleheader. The first pitch from Tomcat Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game 1: Westminster 3, Allegheny 0
Gibbons fired 7.2 scoreless innings to earn his first victory of the year (1-2), allowing seven hits and fanning two. It was his longest start since a nine-inning complete game victory over Geneva College on April 23, 2022. Senior right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) allowed just one hit and struck out one in 1.1 innings of relief work to earn his first save since April 9, 2022 against Bethany College.

Fifth-year right fielder Carter Chinn's (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, his first of the season. Senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) reached on an error to lead off the inning and senior designated hitter Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) followed with a base hit to center. Senior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) laid down a terrific sacrifice bunt that advanced Murgenovich and Dockum before Chinn's sacrifice.

Senior center fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) led of the eighth with a base hit to center and scored three batters later when Tomko reached on a two-out, two-base throwing error. Chinn followed with an RBI single up the middle that scored Tomko.

Chinn had two base hits, two RBIs, a sacrifice fly, was hit by pitch and added and stole a base in the seventh inning. It was his third multi-hit game of the season.

Brent Herrmann suffered his first loss of the season (3-1) in the opener, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in seven innings. Preston Pierce gave up two runs (0 earned) on two hits in the eighth. Matt Jennings went 2-for-4 with a double.

Game 2: Allegheny 12, Westminster 0 (8 inn.)
Allegheny, up 5-0 after plating four runs in the third, broke things open with four more runs in the seventh and another three runs in the eighth.

Four players finished with mult-hit games for the Gators. JD Robinson went 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Jennings was 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, a stolen base, four RBIs and three runs scored while Tyson Bryant-Dawson had two doubles, a stolen base and three runs scored. William Wolff's solo home run in the second staked the Gators to a 1-0 lead. He added a two-run double in the third.

Mark Schweickert moved his record to 3-1 with the complete game shutout. He allowed three hits, walked three and struck out nine.

Randza, Dockum and sophomore first baseman Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) all had base hits. Chinn drew a pair of walks.

Senior left-hander Logan Exler (Pittsburgh, Pa., Serra Catholic) fell to 1-2 this season. He allowed five runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts in three innings.
