Titans forge PAC split with Allegheny

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball team battled back from an early 2-0 deficit in game two to secure a 4-3 victory in the nightcap of Friday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Allegheny College. The Gators cruised to a 10-0 five-inning, run-rule win in the opener.

Westminster sits at 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the PAC while Allegheny is now 10-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Monday, Westminster is scheduled to travel to McKeesport, Pa. to take on Penn State Greater Allegheny. The first pitch from Jamie Brewster-Filotei Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Game 1: Allegheny 10, Westminster 0 (5 inn.)
Allegheny jumped on Westminster early in game one and was supported by a terrific start by Aleya Belardinelli. She picked up her fourth win of the season, allowing just one hit while striking out six in the shutout. Westminster's only hit was a two-out bunt single by freshman catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) in the third inning. The Gators batted around in their five-run second inning.

Allegheny finished with 14 hits in the opener. Samantha Phillips went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI. Hadley Horensky had two doubles and two runs scored while Belardinelli went 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) fell to 5-3 this season with the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Game 2: Westminster 4, Allegheny 3
Trailing 3-2 midway through the fifth, junior shortstop Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley) delivered a two-out, two-run double to right center, which scored sophomore second base Ellie Hsieh (York, Pa., Central York), who reached on an error, and freshman Ashley DeCarbo (New Castle, Pa., Shenango), who entered as a pinch runner for Brown after she reached on a fielders choice.

With one out and a runner on in the top of the seventh, senior starter Liz Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) induced a game-ending double play to cap a stellar start in the circle. She improved to 6-3 after allowing three runs on 14 hits with four strikeouts in the complete-game win. Junior designated player Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) went 3-for-3 with an RBI. It was her first three-hit game of the year. Brown finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess' (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) double to lead off the second inning was her league-leading ninth of the season.

Halle Book paced Allegheny's offensive efforts, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Phillips and Belardinelli both went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Samantha Dzierba fell to 3-2 with the loss. She allowed four runs (2 earned) on 10 hits with a walk in 4.2 innings. Madison Hulse threw 1.1 innings of hitless relief.
