Westminster opens league play with loss at Chatham

PITTSBURGH--Chatham University hung on for a 19-15 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Westminster College Wednesday night at UPMC Graham Field. 

Chatham moved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset) paced Westminster with five goals, three assists, a ground ball and a pair of caused turnovers. She added five draw controls. Wednesday was Rascona's third game this season scoring five or more goals. Sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport) finished with five goals and an assist. It was her third game scoring five or more goals this year. Sophomore attack Haley Wenzel (Coppell, Texas, Coppell) added three goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) had a goal and two assists and finished with seven draw controls, giving her 102 in her career. Sophomore defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) scored a goal and added two ground balls and two caused turnovers. 

Junior Jade Hromanik (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) made a career-high 18 saves Wednesday in Pittsburgh. Hromanik totaled 17 saves in last April's 12-11 loss to Chatham in New Wilmington. 

Chatham finished with five different goal scorers. Sam Beall-Dennell paced the Cougars with six goals and an assist. She added five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Stephanie Walter chipped in with four goals, three assists and a ground ball while Felicia Hutter had six goals, nine ground balls, five caused turnovers and six draw controls. Meghan Cuza-Berry finished with four saves in the win.

Chatham outshot Westminster 44-25 and finished with a 37-21 edge in shots on goal. It was the sixth game this season Westminster had 20 more turnovers. 

Chatham went up 6-3 in the first quarter, led by Hutter's three goals and a pair of scores by Beall-Dennell. The Cougars went into halftime leading by four, 10-6. 

Trailing 14-7 with just under 12 minutes left in the third quarter, Westminster netted four-straight goals over the ensuing 2:42 to pull to within three, 14-11. Brazier bookended the four-goal scoring flurry while Wenzel scored the second and the third goals. Rascona's score with under two minutes left in the quarter cut the Cougars' lead to three, 15-12, heading into the fourth. 

Rascona opened the fourth quarter scoring one minute into the period. After three-straight goals by Chatham pushed its lead ot 18-13 with under 11 minutes left in regulation, Brazier and Rascona went back-to-back a minute apart to pull to within three, 18-15, with 9:36 to go. Hutter scored off of a Walter assist with just over seven minutes to play. 

Westminster hosts Franciscan University Tuesday. The opening draw from the UPMC Sports Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
