Westminster women edged at West Virginia Wesleyan

Rascona reaches 100 career points

BUCKHANNON, W.Va.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-10 loss at West Virginia Wesleyan University Saturday at Cebe Ross Field. 

The Bobcats improved to 4-5 overall while Westminster fell to 1-5. 

Senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset) led Westminster with four goals and three assists. With her seven points Saturday, Rascona became the fifth player in program history to reach 100 career points. She added a ground ball, two caused turnovers and six draw controls. Rascona was 2-for-2 on free position conversions.

Sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport) had two goals, two assists, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls while freshman attack Khloe Huba (Butler, Pa., Butler) scored a pair of goals. Sophomore defenders Morgan Reidy (Pine City, N.Y., Elmira) and Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) both scored goals. The score was Cespedes' first of the season and second of her career. Defensively, she added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) made 12 saves and had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. 

Talia Berardo paced West Virginia Wesleyan offensively with six goals and an assist. She added three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Anna Grace Prophett chipped in with three goals, a ground ball and a caused turnover. Kaitlyn Canby had two goals, an assist, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Makenzi Lewellyn added a goal, two assists, two ground balls, three caused turnovers and nine draw controls. Ella Gomez earned the win in goal and finished with 10 saves in 50 minutes. 

Rascona scored the game's first goal off of an assist by senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) just over six minutes into the first quarter. The Bobcats registered four-straight scores and went into the second up 4-1. Westminster outscored West Virginia Wesleyan 5-2 in the second quarter and went into halftime tied 6-6. Huba scored both of her goals in the period. 

Tied 7-7, back-to-back goals by Rascona and Reidy pushed the Titans ahead 9-7 with four minutes elapsed in the third. The Bobcats netted five-straight goals to end the third and four more to begin the fourth to go ahead by seven, 16-9. Berardo had four goals during the stretch. Rascona had a goal with under four minutes left in regulation to close out the scoring. 

West Virginia Wesleyan outshot Westminster 34-26 and finished with a 28-21 edge in shots on goal. 

Westminster will open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday at Chatham University. The opening draw from UPMC Graham Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
