Titans win home opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team earned a 9-4 victory over La Roche University in its 2024 home opener Saturday afternoon. 

Westminster is now 1-3 this season. La Roche fell to 0-4. 

Senior right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) improved to 1-1 this season with Saturday's win. He allowed one run (0 earned) on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in five innings. Junior left-hander Jake Vitale (New Castle, Pa., Union) threw scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth innings to claim the three-inning save. He worked around back-to-back singles to start the ninth.

Seven walks, a single and a wild pitch led to the Titans scoring six of their nine runs in the bottom of the second inning. 

Senior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa., Greater Latrobe) walked three times, had two RBIs and scored once. Senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) had RBIs on a bases-loaded walk in the second and on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Junior Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) drew a pair of walks, had an RBI and scored on senior first baseman Jake Dockum's (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) second inning sacrifice fly. 

La Roche pitchers issued a combined 11 walks. Starter Zach Gift allowed five runs (5 earned) on one hit with five walks and one strikeout in one inning. Samuel DiCicco and Dimitri Gary each had two hits and an RBI for the RedHawks. 

The RedHawks had nine hits to the Titans' five. 

Westminster will open its five-game run at the The Ripken Experience® Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Titans will face Penn State Schuylkill at 10:30 a.m.
