Westminster drops road game

DUBOIS, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team suffered a 14-2 loss to Penn State DuBois Sunday afternoon at Showers Field.

Penn State DuBois, winners of five straight, improved to 9-4. Westminster fell to 5-8.

Seven pitchers were used by the Titans on Sunday. Junior right-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) fell to 0-2 after making his third start this season. He allowed five runs (4 earned) in three innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich's (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) single in the fifth extended his current hitting streak to five games. He's reached base in 12-straight games. Freshman DJ Donatelli (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) replaced Murgenovich in the bottom of the seventh before doubling in the ninth. It was the first hit of his collegiate career.  Sophomore first baseman Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) doubled to lead off the fifth. It was his fourth extra-base hit of the season. Freshman shortstop Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and was hit by a pitch in the fifth. Sunday was his first collegiate start.

Westminster, trailing 5-1, plated its first run of the day in the fifth when junior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greater Latrobe) drew a bases-loaded walk. The Lions tacked on three more in the sixth, four more in the seventh and added a pair in the eighth. Freshman pinch hitter Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) had a one-out RBI ground out in the ninth.

Maclain Welshans evened his record at 1-1 with Sunday's win. He allowed one run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in four innings of work. The Nittany Lions had 13 players combine to rack up 18 hits, including five extra-base hits. Corey Lehman went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Brandon Sicheri went 3-for-5 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored.

Westminster will host third-ranked Baldwin Wallace University Wednesday. The single, nine-inning game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
