Titan men drop league tilt with Franciscan

Leone hits 1,000 career points

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball squad was dealt a 68-56 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss by visiting Franciscan University at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Wednesday night. 

Franciscan snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, improving to 8-13 overall and 5-12 in league play. The Barons had lost six of their previous seven entering Wednesday's fray. Westminster fell to 10-12 overall and 8-12 in the PAC. Wednesday was Franciscan's first-ever win in New Wilmington (1-6 all-time). 

Three finished in double figures for Westminster. Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) and sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) both had double-doubles. The double-double was DePietro's sixth.

Clark finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots while DePietro had 12 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. It was the fifth double-double of the year for Clark and the sixth for DePietro. Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) finished with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a 3-of-6 effort from three-point field goal range. 

Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) entered Wednesday's game needing seven points to became the 41st player in program history to hit 1,000 career points. He scored his seventh point after making the second of two free throws with 2:44 left in the game. Leone added two rebounds and pair of assists.

Franciscan had three players in double figures. Sawyer Butler registered a 26-point, 10-rebound double-double. He went 8-of-16 from the floor and added four blocked shots and three steals. Josh Zimmerman posted a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double while Joseph Ciola added 15 points and a pair of rebounds. 

The Barons, fueled by a 9-0 scoring run, grabbed a 26-17 lead with just under four minutes left in the first. Butler scored seven of Franciscan's nine during the run. The Barons went into the break up seven, 29-22. 

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) cut the Barons' lead down to seven, 47-40, eight minutes into the second half, but Franciscan's 12-3 spurt over the next 8:30 stretched the visitor's advantage to 16, 59-43. The Barons made 3-of-4 free throws down stretch in logging the 12-point win. 

Westminster hit 37.1 percent (23-62) of its shots from the field but went just 3-of-18 (.167) from three-point range and 7-of-12 (.583) from the free throw line. Franciscan knocked down 40.0 percent (26-65) of its shots and made 8-of-19 three-pointers (.421). The Barons outrebounded the Titans 44-39 and scored 17 points off of Westminster's 17 turnovers. 

Westminster is off Saturday and will return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Geneva College. Tipoff at Metheny Fieldhouse is scheduled for 8 p.m.
