Titans edged on road

BEAVER FALLS, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team was dealt a 71-66 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) defeat by rival Geneva College Wednesday night at Metheny Fieldhouse.

Geneva finished its regular season with a 22-3 overall record and an 18-2 mark in the PAC. Westminster has dropped three-straight games, falling to 10-13 overall and 8-11 in the league.

Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) scored 16 points to lead three Westminster players in double figures. He finished 6-of-14 from the floor and made a season-high four three-pointers. Sophomore Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) scored 13 points while sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) posted a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double, his fifth of the season. The 14 rebounds were a career high. Sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Four players scored in double figures for Geneva. Isaac Massie registered 21 points on 5-of-9 shooting. He went 4-of-7 from three-point range and made all seven of his free throw attempts. Trevor Tipton had 14 points and four rebounds while Ryan Rachic and Mark Rachic each scored 10 points, respectively, while combining for 14 rebounds.

Westminster stormed out to an early eight-point lead, 10-2, three minutes into the first half. A 15-0 Geneva scoring run that covered more than five minutes pushed the Golden Tornadoes ahead by eight, 22-14, with nine minutes remaining in the first. The Titans responded with an 8-0 run of their own and went up one, 26-25, on Leone's made layup with four minutes to go in the half. Geneva went into the break up three, 34-31. Leone led Westminster with 10 first half points.

The longtime rivals traded punches early in the second half before sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) created some separation after drilling a three-pointer that gave Westminster a six-point lead, 42-36, just over five minutes into the second. The back-and-forth affair continued late into the half, with Jones' layup at the 3:58 mark giving the Titans a one-point edge, 64-63. Massie knocked down a pair of free throws 37 seconds later to put the Golden Tornadoes up one, 65-64. Massie hit two more free throws with 21 seconds left in regulation to close out the scoring.

Westminster shot 43.3 percent (26-60) from the floor and made a season-high nine three-pointers. Geneva shot 41.0 percent (25-61) from the field and made 7-of-23 (.304) three-point attempts. The Golden Tornadoes were a combined 14-of-15 (.933) from the free throw line Wednesday.
