Titans suffer league loss to Chatham

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team fell to visiting Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Chatham University by a 72-61 score Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Chatham, winners of four straight, improved to 14-8 overall and 12-5 in the PAC with Saturday's win. Westminster fell to 10-11 overall and 8-9 in league play. The Titans are now 8-3 at home this year. 

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) finished the game with 15 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. He shot 50.0 percent (7-14) from the floor. Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) totaled 13 points and added nine rebounds, four blocked shots and four steals. Sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) had 11 points and four rebounds. He finished 5-of-7 from the free throw line. 

Chatham had four players finish in double figures. Diaun Pinkett had a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double and added five assists. Simon Boyer finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. 

Westminster's 6-0 scoring run midway through the first period pushed the Titans' lead to three, 17-14, with just under 11-and-a-half minutes to go before the break. Pinkett's three-point play with seven minutes left tied the score at 21 and an 11-2 run over the next five minutes put the Cougars ahead by nine, 32-23. Chatham went into intermission up nine, 34-25. Boyer scored eight of his 16 points in the first half. Jones finished the first half with 10 points. 

A pair of Pinkett free throws 12:28 remaining in the game extended Chatham's lead to 16, 47-31.

Westminster responded with a 19-8 run and whittled the lead down to just five, 55-50, with just under six minutes left. Clark had nine points during the run. 

Chatham scored nine-straight points to go back up by 14, 64-50, with three-and-a-half to play. Pinkett scored five points during the stretch. 

Westminster shot 32.8 percent (21-64) from the floor and went 16-of-23 (.696) from the free throw line. Chatham shot 44.6 percent (25-56) from the field and 81.8 percent (18-22) from the free throw line. The Cougars had a 50-31 advantage in rebounding and also had a 40-30 edge in points in the paint. Westminster turned 23 Chatham turnovers into 14 points. 

Westminster will host Franciscan University on Wednesday. Tipoff at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in New Wilmington is scheduled for 8 p.m.
