Westminster falls on Senior Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program fell to visiting Bethany College 67-56 in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

The Titans finished the season with a 12-12 overall record and a 10-10 league record after Saturday's loss. Bethany, winners of five straight, improved to 14-11 overall and 12-8 in the conference. The Bison secured the No. 3 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament with the win and will host No. 6 Saint Vincent College in Tuesday's quarterfinal round.

Westminster celebrated its four seniors prior to tipoff: Caitlyn Condoleon (Warren, Ohio, Warren JFK)Breannda Davis (Streetsboro, Ohio, Streetsboro)Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, Maine, Greely) and Mariah Vincent (Franklin, Pa., Kennedy Catholic).

Fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) paced Westminster with 17 points. She added nine rebounds and three assists. The program's all-time leading scorer, Murrio finished her brilliant career with 1,652 career points in 118 games played. 

Junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) totaled 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and added seven rebounds. Vincent added nine points on 3-of-9 shooting from three-point field goal range. Fitzpatrick had eight points on 3-of-5 shooting and added four rebounds while Condoleon finished with seven points and four assists. 

Bella Skobel finished with 26 points to lead Bethany. She went 7-of-13 from the floor, 2-of-4 from three-point range and hit 10 of her 11 attempted free throws. Skobel did most of her damage in the third quarter, scoring 11 of Bethany's 15 points.

Tied at 28 with 16 second left in the second quarter, Murrio drilled a jumper as time expired in the half to give the Titans a two-point edge heading into halftime. 

Westminster opened the third quarter riding a 10-2 run and stretched its lead to 10, 40-30, on a Murrio three-pointer six minutes into the half. With Bethany trailing 42-32, Skobel scored nine-straight points for over the next 1:25 to cut the deficit to one, 42-41. Westminster led 47-43 going into the fourth quarter. 

Bethany erupted for 24 fourth quarter points. Skobel's layup with 7:30 left tied the game at 50 and Makenzee Mason's bucket with just over seven minutes remaining gave the Bison a 52-50 lead. Bethany outscored Westminster 11-3 over the next six minutes, capped by a pair of made Skobel free throws with 42 seconds left.

Westminster shot 42.3 percent (22-52) from the floor and 30.0 percent (6-20) from three-point range. The Titans outrebounded the Bison 38-30. Bethany made a season-high 24 free throws (28 att.) Saturday. Westminster went 6-of-12 (.500) from the free throw line.
