Titans suffer Senior Day setback

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered an 89-85 loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany College Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Bethany snapped a four-game losing streak with Saturday's win. The Bison improved to 9-16 overall and 8-12 in the PAC. Bethany snagged the No. 6 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament with its road win Saturday and will travel to No. 3 Chatham University for a quarterfinal matchup Tuesday night. Westminster fell to 10-14 overall and 8-12 in the conference. The Titans dropped four-straight games to end the regular season. 

Westminster celebrated its three seniors prior to tipoff: Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local)Dylan Hanna (Akron, Ohio, Akron Springfield) and Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch).

Westminster had four finish in double figures, including three that scored 20 or more. Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) finished with a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double, his sixth of the season. Saturday was his 10th time this season score at least 20 points. Jones finished the regular season as the No. 5 scorer in the league, averaging 17.5 points per game. Clark added 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists while sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) registered a 20-points, 10 rebound double-double, his sixth of the year. Leone had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. 

Bethany had six players finish in double figures. Cole Dailey led the way with a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double. He finished 7-of-14 from the floor. 

A 13-2 Bethany run, keyed by a pair of Ben Guffey three-pointers, gave Bethany a 22-15 edge with 12 minutes left in the first half. Fueled by a 7-0 late in the first, Westminster tied the game at 41 with 1:24 remaining before the break. The Bison carried a 45-43 lead into halftime. 

Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) knocked down a three-pointer 18 seconds into the second that gave Westminster a 46-45 lead. Following four lead changes, Clark's layup drew the Titans even with the Bison at 68 with 8:16 to play. Bethany scored five-straight points before the the four-minute media timeout and led by five, 80-75, with 3:28 left. Jaydis Kennedy had four of Bethany's five points during the stretch. Jones knocked down a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining to pull Westminster back to within two, 87-85, before Troy Hixson went 2-for-2 from the free throw line to close it out. 

Westminster finished shooting 43.8 percent (32-73) from the field and went 5-of-21 (.238) from the three-point line. The Titans went 16-of-20 (.800) from the free throw line while the Bison went 17-of-25 (.680). Saturday was Bethany's 11th game this season making 12 or more three-pointers. The Bison lead the league with 252 made three-pointers this season.
