Westminster women cruise in league win

GREENVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program earned a 71-43 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Thiel College Wednesday evening at Maenpa Court inside Beeghly Gymnasium. 

Westminster picked up its first victory of the year Wednesday, improving to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the PAC. Thiel fell to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play. It was Westminster's fifth-straight win in the series. 

Sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) had a terrific game in her hometown, leading three players in double figures. She collected career highs in points, with 16, and rebounds, with 11, for the first double-double of her career. Cano finished 8-of-17 from the floor. 

Freshman forward Ella Kassan (Streetsboro, Ohio, Streetsboro) fired in a career-high 12 points to go along with career-best seven boards. Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) finished with 11 points, her third-straight game scoring in double figures. Senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) totaled six points and a season-high 10 boards. Sophomore guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) finished with career highs in rebounds (6) and assists (6). 

Eleven players scored the Titans Wednesday. They shot a season-high 42 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Tomcats 56-20. 

Kayley Risser had 15 points and six rebounds for Thiel. 

Leading 18-15 after one quarter, Westminster outscored Thiel 20-7 in the second and carried a 38-22 lead into halftime. Cano had 10 points and eight boards at the break. Maryo added nine first half points on three three-pointers while Kassan added eight points in the first two quarters.

Westminster doubled up Thiel 18-9 in the third. Cano and freshman guard Angelina Brush (Murrysville, Pa., Franklin Regional) had six points apiece in the quarter.

Westminster returns to action on Monday, Dec. 16 when it hosts Waynesburg University. Tipoff at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
