Westminster women fall to Salisbury

HUNTINGDON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 68-45 loss to Salisbury University (Md.) Monday night at the Juniata College Holiday Tournament inside Memorial Gymnasium. 

Westminster, now 1-9 this season, will take on Kings College in the tournament's consolation game Tuesday at 1 p.m. Salisbury improved to 8-4 with Monday's win and will face host Juniata Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the title game. Juniata defeated King's 70-55 in Monday's opener. 

Westminster trailed Salisbury 32-18 at halftime. The Sea Gulls led 18-14 after one quarter before outscoring the Titans 13-4 in the second. Freshman guard Emma Morris (Struthers, Ohio, Struthers) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and added two rebounds in the first half for Westminster.

Westminster started the second half on a 6-1 run, managing to cut Salisbury's lead to seven, 33-26, four minutes into the third. The Sea Gulls responded with a 10-0 run that stretched their lead to 17, 43-26, with just over four to go in the quarter. Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) connected on two three-pointers late in the third that helped the Titans cut the deficit to 14, 51-37, heading into the fourth quarter. Salisbury outscored Westminster 17-8 in the final quarter. 

Maryo paced the Titans with 12 points. Freshman guard Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) chipped in with seven points and six rebounds in 18 reserve minutes. Monday was her first appearance since Nov. 13. Sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) had five points and five rebounds while freshman Ella Kassan (Streetsboro, Ohio, Streetsboro) finished with five points and three boards. Senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) posted six rebounds. 

Abby Plaugher led three Salisbury players in double figures, finishing with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including making four of her six three-point field goal attempts.
