Westminster falls to Waynesburg

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program was dealt a 53-44 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss by visiting Waynesburg University Monday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Waynesburg evened its record at 5-5 overall and improved to 1-5 in the league. Monday's victory snapped a 11-game losing streak against Titans. It was also the Yellow Jackets' first road win the series since an 80-61 triumph on Jan. 6, 2018. Westminster fell to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the PAC.

Freshman guard Angelina Brush (Murrysville, Pa., Franklin Regional) paced Westminster with a career-high 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting. She added four boards. Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) chipped in with nine points and three assists while sophomore guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) and sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) each had seven. Senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) finished with a career-high 15 rebounds.

Kalista Friday led Waynesburg with 14 points in 26 reserve minutes. She went 6-of-9 from the floor and added seven rebounds and three steals. Julz Mohrbacher registered her third-straight double-double, going for 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Brush had five of her 12 in the first quarter, helping push Westminster to a 13-7 lead going into the second. Maryo knocked down a pair of free throws with just over four minutes to go before halftime that stretched the Titans' lead to eight, 19-11. The Jackets finished the half riding a 9-1 scoring run to tie the game at 20-20 heading into the break.

A Brush layup followed by a Maryo three-pointer 48 seconds into the third gave Westminster a quick five-point lead, 25-20. The Jackets outscored the Titans 9-0 over the ensuing three-plus minutes to grab a 29-25 lead. Waynesburg's lead swelled to 11, 37-26, with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Jackets went into the fourth up seven, 37-30, after Arison's buzzer-beating three-pointer. Brush's three trimmed the lead to nine, 48-39, with 5:20 remaining, but five-straight points from the Jackets pushed their lead to 14, 53-39.

Waynesburg posted a 49-45 edge in rebounding, outscored the Titans 32-24 in the paint and had a 23-11 advantage in bench scoring. The Jackets shot 63.6 percent (7-11) from the line; the Titans 44.4 percent (8-18).
