Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Westminster rally falls short in season-opening loss to Bridgewater

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball program opened its season Friday night with a 71-69 loss to visiting Bridgewater College (Va.) at the Buzz Ridl Classic.

Established in 1991 and now in its 33rd year, the Buzz Ridl Classic was created to honor, promote and preserve the indelible legacy and impact on the sport of basketball by former Westminster coach and administrator, Charles "Buzz" Ridl.

Up 36-31 at the break, the Eagles opened up the second half outscoring the Titans 11-5 and led 47-36 with under 15 minutes left. Jordan Cooper and Aarron Oates had five points apiece during the stretch.

Westminster, fueled by a 7-2 run, cut the lead to six, 49-43, with 13:30 remaining on sophomore guard Justin Wypasek's (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) jumper. Later, an 11-4 Westminster run trimmed Bridgewater's lead to one, 59-58, with 7:37 to go. Junior guard Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) buried a pair of three-pointers during the scoring run.

Brigdgewater's lead ballooned to 10, 70-60, with under five to play before Hendershott's three-pointer with under two minutes remaining capped a Westminster 9-0 run and cut the deficit to one, 70-69. Hendershott missed a layup out of a timeout with under 30 seconds to go in regulation and Wypasek missed a jumper with five seconds left. Cooper split a pair of free throws with a second left to close out the scoring.

Sophomore guard Skevos Kouros (Youngstown, Ohio, Campbell) poured in a career-high 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting for Westminster. He added seven rebounds and four steals. Kouros scored 15 of his 19 in the first half. Hendershott finished with 16 points, knocking down 4-of-9 three-point attempts, while freshman guard Christian Ito (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper St. Clair) totaled 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting in 17 reserve minutes.

Cooper paced Bridgewater with 20 points and eight rebounds while Oates finished with an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double.
