Westminster falls to John Carroll in home opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program opened its home slate Wednesday evening with a 94-53 loss to John Carroll University at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

John Carroll improved to 3-0 with Wednesday's win. Westminster fell to 0-3. 

Freshman guard Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) finished with 14 points and six rebounds. She went 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) added eight points, five rebounds and a pair of assists while freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) had seven points and two steals. Sophomore forward Reagan Courter (Wapakoneta, Ohio, Wapakoneta) chipped in with five points.

Westminster shot 32.7 percent (18-55) from the field, including 40.0 percent (4-10) from three-point range. The Titans knocked down 13-of-17 (.765) free throws. John Carroll finished shooting 50.8 percent (32-63) from the floor and hit 7-of-21 (.333) attempted three-point field goals. The Blue Streaks went 23-of-33 (.697) from the free throw line. 

Five players from John Carroll finished in double figures. Kaylie McKenney led the Blue Streaks with 15 points and five rebounds. Abigail Rosol added 14 points and seven rebounds. After Maryo's game-opening layup, John Carroll strung together a 15-0 scoring run before carrying a 17-4 in the second quarter. Rosnol had nine of her 14 during the run. 

Westminster opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Bethany College. Tipoff at Joe Kurey Memorial Court in Hummel Field House is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
