Westminster opens PAC schedule with straight set win at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College women's volleyball program opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Wednesday night by locking up a straight set win over Thiel College.

Westminster was strong at the start, kept working in the second set and won 25-20, 25-18, 25-16 inside a buzzing Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium. 

Wednesday's win ran Westminster's overall record to 14-9 while Thiel, who entered as winners of six-straight matches, fell to 13-4. The Tomcats were held to a season-low .034 hitting percentage. 

Junior outside hitter Rachel Brady (Columbus, Pa., Corry) finished with 12 kills and hit .267 to lead the Titans' offense. She added six digs and three block assists. Sophomore right side Orlasia Hunter (Canton, Ohio, Saint Thomas Aquinas) totaled a career-high eight kills and hit .238 while sophomore outside hitter Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) added seven kills and 14 digs. Junior middle hitter Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) had six kills, three total blocks and three digs. 

Junior setter Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) posted a 16-assist, 11-dig double-double, her eighth of the year, while freshman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) finished with 16 assists and seven digs. Freshman libero Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) paced the defense with 26 digs, her fourth match this season with 20 or more digs. Gecina is currently 10th in the league with a 4.30 digs per set average.

Daisy Jenness led Thiel with 14 kills and 10 digs. She is leading the PAC with a 3.88 digs per set average. Carlie Reynolds had 25 assists and 11 digs. Danielle Aulet finished with 23 digs. 

Down 15-9 in the first, Westminster strung together four-straight points to the even the match at 18-all. After a pair of attack errors gave Thiel a 20-18 edge, Westminster registered the final seven points of the set to win 25-20. Trent finished the run with three kills and had five of her seven in the opening set. 

Tied at 9-all in the second, the Titans scored six-straight points to go up 15-9 before a Brady kill extended the lead to 20-16. The Titans scored seven of the final nine points in the second to win 25-18. Brady had four kills in the second. 

In the third, a Jenness kill pulled Thiel to within one, 8-7. before Westminster answered with seven-straight points to go up eight, 15-7. Leading 21-11, kills by Rambo, senior middle Jamie Robertson (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter) and a pair from Brady sealed the third set win.

Westminster remains on the road, traveling to Chatham University, the runner-up in last year's PAC Championship Tournament, Saturday. The opening serve from the Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC) is scheduled for 1 p.m.
