Westminster rolls past Chatham in straight sets

PITTSBURGH--The Westminster College women's volleyball program earned a straight-set Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory at Chatham University's Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC) Saturday afternoon. 

Saturday's win was the third straight for Westminster and pushed the Titans' record to 15-9 overall and 2-0 in the league. Chatham, the runner-up in last year's PAC Championship Tournament, fell to 6-10 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

Westminster claimed the match with set scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-15. 

Junior outside hitter Rachel Brady (Columbus, Pa., Corry) and sophomore outside hitter Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) finished with nine kills apiece. Trent added 20 digs and a pair of service aces. Senior right side Ava Ferringer (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) hit .278 with eight kills and two block assists while junior middle hitter Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) added five kills and 2.5 total blocks and sophomore right side Orlasia Hunter (Canton, Ohio, Saint Thomas Aquinas) finished with five kills and three digs. 

Westminster had a pair of setters, junior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) and freshman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), post double-doubles. Nardone totaled 14 assists and 12 digs while O'Brien had 12 assists and 11 digs. 

Becca Gesner led Chatham with eight kills and 14 digs. Ava Plunkard had 24 assists. 

Down 22-20 in the first, Westminster rattled off five-straight points down the stretch to take the set. In the second, Chatham jumped out to a 5-0 lead and went up 11-5. After trading 10-straight points, the Cougars stretched their lead to 20-15. The Titans strung together a run of nine-straight points, included three-straight kills by Trent to start the run, to go up 24-20 before holding on to win by three. Leading 21-15 in the third, Westminster scored the final four points of the set to secure the match win.

On Wednesday, Westminster will travel to Saint Vincent College. The opening serve from the Robert S. Carey Student Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
