Westminster edges Franciscan for PAC win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's tennis program picked up a 4-3 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Franciscan University Wednesday afternoon. 

Westminster grabbed a 3-1 lead on Tuesday, Oct. 1 before the match was suspended due to darkness. The win snapped a three-match losing streak to Franciscan. Westminster's record now sits at 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference while Franciscan fell to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the PAC.  

Westminster secured the first point last Tuesday by winning two doubles matches. Seniors Gia Francisco (Canfield, Ohio, Canfield) and Emma Sukal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles over Claire Cardie and Kina Ehlers. At No. 2 doubles, senior Ryleigh Valone (Erie, Pa., Villa Maria Academy) and sophomore Emma Overlingas (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) beat Sophia Pastura and Jordan Beltavski 7-6 (5). 

Last Tuesday, sophomore Morgan Allen (Johnstown, Pa., Westmont Hilltop) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles over Margaret Vernau while Overlingas earned a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 singles against Hazel Mistry
Overlingas has won nine-straight singles matches this season. Franciscan's Lauren Schoenberger defeated junior Grace Askey (Dubois, Pa., Jeff Tech) 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to close out the scoring before the match was suspended. 

Franciscan tied the match at 3-3 Wednesday with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Ehlers posted a 7-6 (2), 6-3 decision over Sukal while Jordan Beltavski won 7-5, 7-5 against Valone. Francisco and Cardie resumed their match at No. 1 singles with Cardie leading after a 6-1 first set win. Francisco secured back-to-back wins in the second and third to take the match 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Westminster wraps up its regular season at Allegheny College Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Tennis Courts at Robertson.
