Westminster wins in five over W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's volleyball team won a five-set thriller over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster, winners of five of its last six, improved to 17-10 overall and 4-1 in the PAC. W&J fell to 11-12 and 2-4 in the league. The Presidents earned a three-set sweep of the Titans at the Allegheny College Invitational on Sept. 14.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Brady (Columbus, Pa., Corry) hit .250 while registering a career-high 16 kills. She added nine digs. Senior right side Ava Ferringer (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) had eight kills, 2.0 blocks and five digs while sophomore right side Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) added seven kills, a career-high 32 digs and four service aces.

Junior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) finished with a 25-assist, 12-dig double-double while freshman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) added 16 assists and six digs. Freshman Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) had 18 digs and a pair of service aces.

Faith Fetsko led W&J with a 13-kill, 13-dig double-double.

Trailing 1-0 after dropping the opening set 25-17, Westminster went up 2-1 after posting a 25-17 win in the second and a 25-20 win in the third. Three-straight kills by junior middle hitter Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview), Trent and Brady late in the second stretched the Titans' lead to 22-14. Down 16-13 in the third set, Westminster strung together five-straight points, keyed by a pair of Gecina service aces, to go up two, 18-16. A kill by junior outside hitter Charlotte Burgan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) pushed Westminster's lead to five, 24-19, in the third. W&J, trailing 10-9 in the fourth, ripped off six-straight points to go up five, 15-10. Westminster countered with its own six-point run, turning its 15-11 deficit into a 16-15 lead. Brady had a pair of kills during the Titans' run. Tied 22-22, three-straight kills from Emma Padovano, Rian Benz and Jaden Blough closed out the set to force the deciding fifth set.

Westminster went up 3-0 early and led 8-6 at the turn. Beyonce Pierce and Padovano kills evened the set at 5-5. Padovano, Abby Oldham and Fetsko tied the fifth at 13-13 with three-straight kills. An attack error pushed Westminster's lead to 14-13 before senior right side Ava Ferringer's (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) kill secured the win with a kill.
