Westminster falls at home to Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's soccer program suffered a 1-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Thiel College Wednesday night at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Westminster fell to 5-8-2 overall and 2-6-0 in conference play. Thiel improved its record to 7-7-1 overall and 2-6-0 in the PAC. Wednesday snapped Thiel's 13-match losing streak against Westminster. It was the Tomcats' first win over the Titans since a 1-0 triumph on Oct. 22, 2010 in New Wilmington.  

Mitchell Strauss scored off a free kick in the 16th minute to secure the win for Thiel. It was his third goal this season. Bryce Stefanowicz made seven saves while posting his third shutout of the year. 

Senior forward Connor Schmidt (Evans City, Pa., Seneca Valley) and freshman forward Santiago Fernandez (Lake City, Fla., Freedom) had four shots each and both finished with a shot on goal. Sophomore Aaron Snyder (Hatboro, Pa., Upper Moreland) had two saves in the loss. 

Westminster out shot Thiel 15-7 and had a 7-3 shots on goal advantage. Westminster had seven corner kicks while Thiel had just two. Each team had one player receive a yellow card. 

Westminster is on the road Saturday at Bethany College. The opening kick from Don Ault Field at Bison Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
