Westminster notches first round win over W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College earned a 5-2 victory over Washington & Jefferson College Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament. 

Westminster, the tournament's No. 4 seed, improved to 8-3 this season. The No. 5 seed, W&J concluded its fall schedule with a 7-6 record.

At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Morgan Allen (Johnstown, Pa., Westmont Hilltop) and senior Taylor Dlugozima (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) won 6-3 over Emma Humphrey and Paisley Cole. Senior Ryleigh Valone (Erie, Pa., Villa Maria Academy) and sophomore Emma Overlingas (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) defeated Jaelyn Kennedy and Mackenzie Gumto by a 6-3 decision to clinch the first point of the match. The No. 1 doubles match was unfinished due to the doubles point already being decided.

Allen scored the matches' second point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gumto at No. 5 singles. Nidhi Pulicherla and Claire Loomis both won their singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, to tie the match 2-2. At No. 6 singles, junior Grace Askey (Dubois, Pa., Jeff Tech) defeated Humphrey 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 before Valone recorded a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kennedy at No. 3 singles to secure the win for Westminster. Overlingas won her match 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 against Cole moments later at No. 4 singles.

Westminster travels Meadville, Pa. to take on top-seeded Allegheny College Saturday in the semifinal round. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Tennis Courts at Robertson.
