Murrio breaks all-time scoring record in win over Geneva

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) became the program's all-time leading scorer in a 65-47 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over rival Geneva College at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Wednesday evening.

Westminster ran its record to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the league. Geneva fell to 6-8 overall and 5-4 in the PAC. 

Murrio finished with 20 points, going 6-of-13 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. She entered Wednesday's game with 1,468 points, needing 16 points to surpass Emilee Ackerman, who finished with 1,483 career points in 109 games played between 2004 and 2008. Murrio now has 1,488 points in 107 career games. She is currently No. 5 among NCAA Division III active career scoring leaders.

Senior Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, Maine, Greely) added seven points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Graduate student Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) had seven points, four rebounds and five assists while junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) finished with seven points and four boards. Fifth-year Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio, Ursuline) scored five points and totaled a season-high 13 rebounds. 

Mia San Nicolas finished with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double for Geneva. 

Up one, 19-18, after one, Westminster used a 7-2 scoring sport late in the second to go up 10, 39-29, on a Murrio three-pointer with under a minute to play in the half. The Titans led 39-31 at the break. Murrio scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half on 4-of-8 shooting. 

Murrio scored her 1,484th career point with 9:33 remaining in the third, splitting a pair of free throws. The Titans stretched their lead to 16, 51-35, on Hess' layup with under five minutes to go in the quarter. Fueled by a 9-1 run Geneva pulled to within eight, 52-44, on a San Nicholas layup with under two minutes left in the third. Hergenrother connected on a three-pointer at the buzzer to stake Westminster to a 13-point lead, 57-44, going into the fourth. 

Westminster led by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter. 

Westminster finished with a commanding 66-32 advantage on the glass, including a 26-6 edge in offensive rebounds. The rebounds were the most for the Titans since registering 80 in a 102-80 home win over Geneva on Dec. 11, 2021. Westminster also outscored Geneva 36-22 in the paint. 

Westminster will host Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. 

Note: head coach Rosanne Scott, a two-time PAC Player of the Year at Bethany College, finished her career with 1,636 points (1996-2000).
