Westminster women drop league matchup to W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 62-50 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to visiting Washington & Jefferson College at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Wednesday evening.

W&J, winners of four straight, improved to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in the league. Westminster fell to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the PAC. 

Fifth-year senior Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) led all scorers with 17 points, finishing 6-of-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. She added four rebounds. Graduate student Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) and junior Alaina Moore (Weirton, W.Va., Madonna) each scored eight points while junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) totaled six points and six rebounds. Fifth-year Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio, Ursuline) registered a season-high 16 rebounds. 

Bryn Bezjak led W&J with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists. Meghan Dryburgh added nine points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Eleven players scored Wednesday for the Presidents. 

Murrio scored five quick points for Westminster as the Titans lead 7-2 just over three minutes into the first. W&J followed up with a 15-2 scoring run to go up eight, 17-9, with just over two to play in the quarter. Dryburgh had eight of her nine during the Presidents' run. Stellanie Loutsion knocked down a three-pointer with just under a minute to go that gave W&J a 20-12 lead going into the second. Murrio's layup with 5:28 left in the half cut the W&J lead to 10, 24-14, but the Presidents closed the quarter by outscoring the Titans 14-4 and went into the break up 20, 38-18.

Murrio and Hergenrother opened the third by combining to outscore W&J 8-1 and cut the deficit to 13, 39-26, with 6:18 left in the quarter. Bezjak scored seven of W&J's next 11 points to stretch the visitor's lead to 22, 39-26, with 2:42 remaining in the third and the Presidents led 55-34 heading into the fourth. Westminster outscored W&J 16-7 in the fourth, with Moore scoring all eight of her points in the quarter. Five players scored in the fourth for the Titans. 

W&J shot 37.9 percent (22-58) from the floor and went 13-of-20 (.650) from the free throw line. Westminster shot 27.9 percent (19-68) from the field and converted 8-of-15 (.533) free throw attempts. W&J turned 15 Westminster turnovers into 17 points. Westminster finished with a 48-43 rebounding advantage. 

Westminster will travel to Bethany College Saturday. Tipoff at Joe Kurey Memorial Court inside Hummel Field House is scheduled for 1 p.m.
