Titans fall at home to Geneva

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered a 79-66 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to longtime rival Geneva College Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster dropped to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the PAC. Geneva improved to 12-2 overall and 8-1 in league action. 

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) paced Westminster with 20 points and four rebounds. He finished 10-of-17 from the floor. Wednesday was Jones' sixth game this season scoring 20 or more points. Sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) added 10 points, two rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) finished with seven points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) chipped in with seven points. 

Trevor Tipton led five Geneva players in double figures, finishing with 17 points and three rebounds. Ryan Rachic had 16 points and five rebounds while Payton Triplett added 15 points and six rebounds. 

Trailing 9-7 after Clark drilled his first of two three-pointers in the half, Geneva rattled off nine-straight points to up by seven, 16-9, with under 16 minutes to go in the first. Freshman Justin Wypasek (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) scored on a layup that cut Geneva's lead to three, 21-18, with nine minutes left before a 10-2 scoring spurt by the Golden Tornadoes pushed their lead to 11, 31-20. Geneva's Isaac Massie scored a traditional three-point play with just under two minutes in the half to extend the visitor's lead to 13, 40-27. Clark beat the buzzer with a three-point field goal from 45 feet out that cut the lead at the half to eight, 44-36. 

Jones scored on a floater 40 seconds into the second that cut the deficit to eight, 46-38, but Geneva led by double figures through the final 19 minutes. Freshman Brady DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) hit the backend of a pair of free throws with just over seven minutes left that trimmed Geneva's lead to 10, 68-58, but back-to-back three-pointers by Jonathan Bertovich and Tipton extended Geneva's lead to 16 with just over six to go in regulation.

Westminster shot 41.8 percent (28-67) from the field and 21.1 percent (4-19) from the three-point line. Geneva went 28-of-60 (.467) from the floor and hit 50.0 percent (12-24) of its three-point field goal attempts. The Golden Tornadoes finished with a 41-32 rebounding advantage and outscored the Titans 44-28 in the paint. 

Westminster steps out of league play Saturday against the University of Mary Washington. Tipoff at the Anderson Center in Fredericksburg, Va. is slated for 3 p.m.
