Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Trio of double-double efforts lead Westminster to overtime win against W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) and sophomores Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) and Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) all posted double-double efforts for the Westminster College men's basketball program in its 71-69 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) overtime victory against Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster snapped a two-game losing streak with Wednesday's win, improving to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in the league. The Titans are 6-2 at home this season. W&J fell to 2-13 overall and 1-9 in the PAC.

Westminster scored a 102-98 overtime win against W&J on Jan. 18, 2023 in New Wilmington.

DePietro finished with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double, his fourth of the year. He went 5-of-8 from the floor and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Clark finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and knocked down a pair of free throws with six seconds left in the overtime period to lead the Titans to the two-point win. They were Clark's only free throws of the night. Jones had 11 points and 12 rebounds to secure his third double-double of the season. His 12 rebounds were as career high.

Alex Acosta paced W&J with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double. He went 7-of-13 from the floor and made 6-of-7 free throw attempts.

Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) buried a jump shot with just under four minutes left in the first half to give Westminster a 36-25 lead. The Titans went into the break up nine, 42-33.

Westminster's second half lead swelled to as many 14, going up 48-34 with 16:41 to go in the period. W&J, fueled by a 16-2 scoring run, evened the score at 50-50 with 9:23 to play. Brandon Jakiela scored eight of his 11 points during the run. Jones' floating jumper with just over four left in regulation pushed Westminster's lead to five, 63-58. Nick Gearhart drilled a three-pointer with 2:49 left to cut the lead to 63-61 before Matt Seidl's fastbreak layup with just over two remaining tied the game at 63-63 going into overtime.

Gearhart's second three-pointer of the game gave the Presidents a 68-67 lead with just over a minute to go in overtime. Jones' putback on a DePietro miss put Westminster up one, 69-68, with 43 seconds to go. Clark's two free throws extended the lead to three, 71-68, late. Gearhart hit the first of two free throw attempts following senior Reese Leone's (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) foul with five seconds to play before his intentional miss of the second was corralled by sophomore Alex Rothwell (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local).

Westminster shot 43.5 percent (27-62) from the floor and hit 5-of-20 (.250) three-point field goal attempts. The Titans went a combined 12-of-17 (.706) from the free throw line, had a 46-32 advantage on the glass and scored 22 points off of 16 W&J turnovers. The Presidents outscored the Titans 54-34 in the paint.

Westminster will travel to Bethany College Saturday. Tipoff at Joe Kurey Memorial Court inside Hummel Field House is scheduled for 3 p.m.
