Westminster men edged late at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va.--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered a 89-86 setback at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany College Saturday evening at Joe Kurey Memorial Court inside Hummel Field House.

Bethany improved to 6-10 overall and 5-6 in PAC play. Westminster fell to 7-8 overall and 5-6 in the league.

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) led three Westminster players in double figures, firing in a career-high 25 points. He went 11-of-22 from the floor and added six rebounds. Saturday was the seventh time this season Jones scored 20 or more points in a game. Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) had 14 points and four rebounds while sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) chipped in with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double, his fifth of the year.

Bethany's Cole Dailey led five players double figures, posting a 27-point, 10-rebound double-double.

In a back-and-forth first half, Westminster used an 8-2 scoring spurt to forge a 39-33 lead with just over four minutes to go. Sophomore Alex Rothwell (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) had four points during the run. Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) connected on a pair of free throws with just under a minute remaining in the half that gave the Titans a 47-45 lead going into the break.

Jones and Leone had nine and seven points, respectively, to lead Westminster in first half scoring. Nine different players scored in the first half for the Titans. Westminster outrebounded Bethany 24-15 and combined to go 11-of-13 from the free throw line in the opening half.

Tony Fox had a pair of early second half layups during a 7-0 Bethany scoring run that put the home team in front 54-49. A Leone layup with just over three minutes left in regulation trimmed the Bison lead to two, 84-82, and freshman Justin Wypasek (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) leveled the score at 84 with a made jumper at the 2:24 mark.

After Dailey and Wypasek traded buckets with just over a minute remaining, the score remain tied at 86 before Dailey's three-point play with 38 seconds left gave Bethany an 89-86 lead.

Westminster shot 41.9 percent (31-74) from the field and went 21-of-26 (.808) from the free throw line. Bethany shot 47.9 percent (34-71) from the floor and hit 10 of its 27 (.370) three-point field goal attempts. Bethany's bench outscored the Westminster reserves 30-24. The Bison finished with a 41-40 edge on the glass.
