Westminster men fall at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered a 74-71 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to rival Waynesburg University Wednesday evening at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Waynesburg improved to 8-8 overall and 5-6 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 7-9 overall and 5-7 in the league. Waynesburg's win Wednesday snapped a 10-game losing streak against Westminster. The Yellow Jacket's last series win was an 81-75 victory in New Wilmington on Dec. 5, 2018. Earlier this season, Westminster earned a 67-66 overtime win at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium on Nov. 21.

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) totaled 16 points and seven rebounds to lead four Westminster players in double figures. Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) finished with 15 second half points, going 5-of-14 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point field goal range, while senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) and freshman Justin Wypasek (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) finished with 10 points each. Clark added eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while Wypasek had a pair of assists.

Jaylen Davis led Waynesburg with a 21-point, 17-rebound double-double. Antone Baker added 20 points and six rebounds while Jordan McLoyd finished with 15 points.

Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) knocked down a three-pointer with just over 15 minutes left in the first that gave the Titans an 11-7 lead. Waynesburg, fueled by a 10-0 scoring spurt, went up six, 17-11, on Ryan Felberg's jumper with just under 12 to go in the half. Sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) split a pair of free throws with 9:36 remaining in the first to cut Waynesburg's lead to two, 19-17, before the Yellow Jacket's lead swelled to seven, 27-20, on McLoyd's layup with just under six minutes remaining. Clark capped a 9-2 Westminster run with a layup that leveled the game at 29 with 1:38 left, but McLoyd responded with a three-pointer and Korey Mitchum hit a pair of free throws with under a minute left in the half. Westminster trailed by five, 34-29, going into the break.

Davis had 17 points and eight rebounds in the first half for Waynesburg, going 6-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Jones had nine first half points to go along with three rebounds while Clark added seven points and four rebounds.

Leone's pull-up jumper five and a half minutes into the second trimmed Waynesburg's lead to three, 42-39, and he split a pair of free throws 45 seconds later to pull the Titans to within two, 42-40. Down one, Leone hit a three-pointer and Wypasek buried a jumper to stretch Westminster's lead to four, 53-49, with just under nine minutes left in regulation and cap an 11-3 run. Jones' three-point play with just under three remaining gave Westminster a 69-66 lead. After watching Baker hit a pair of free throws with 42 seconds left that gave the Yellow Jackets a 70-69 lead, Jones delivered a two-handed slam with a half minute remaining that put the Titans up one, 71-70. Baker's jumper with 14 seconds left gave Waynesburg to a one-point lead, 72-71, and McLoyd's two made free throws extended the lead to three, 74-71.

Wednesday's eight made three-pointers tied the program's season high (8-of-21 vs. Allegheny, 12-06-23). The Titans shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the floor and went 8-of-18 (.444) from three-point field goal range. Waynesburg went 27-of-58 (.466) from the field but were limited to just 2-of-9 shooting (.222) from three-point range. The Yellow Jackets were 18-of-23 (.783) from the free throw line while the Titans made 11 of their 17 (.647) attempted free throws.

Waynesburg outrebounded Westminster 39-32 and had a 40-26 edge in points scored in the paint. Westminster's bench outscored the Waynesburg reserves 17-6.

Saturday, Westminster will host Saint Vincent College. Tipoff in New Wilmington is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
