Westminster tops Waynesburg 31-20

WAYNESBURG, Pa.--Ryan Gomes (Tampa, Fla., Walter L. Sickles) ran for 136 yards and a touchdown in Saturday afternoon's 31-20 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Waynesburg University at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Westminster pushed its record to 2-2. Waynesburg fell to 0-4.

Saturday was Westminster's eighth-straight win over Waynesburg, tying the longest streak in series history. It was the Titans' fifth-straight win against the Yellow Jackets in Waynesburg. 

Gomes finished with a season-high 29 carries Saturday. it was his second-straight game in Waynesburg with 100-plus rushing yards. He had 19 carries for 175 yards in last year's 30-10 win in Waynesburg.

With Westminster leading by four, 17-13, after three quarters, Gomes scored on a 4-yard run with 7:47 left to stretch the lead to 11, 24-13. Jordan Lowe (Detroit, Mich., Cass Tech) had five carries for 38 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown run with under six minutes to go in the fourth. 

Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) hooked up with Chevy Dawson (Port St. Lucie, Fla., Centennial) on a 34-yard touchdown with five minutes left in the first quarter to open the scoring. McGowan threw a 20-yard touchdown to Taite Beachy (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) with 25 seconds left in the first half, staking Westminster to a 14-3 going into the break. 

Dawson and Beachy both have a pair of touchdown catches this season. 

McGowan finished with 135 yards on 9-of-17 passing. He also threw a pair of interceptions and was sacked once.

Dylan Sleva (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) registered a game-high 10 stops (8 solo). He is averaging 10.5 tackles per game this season. Sleva's third quarter interception of Samuel Barber was the first of his career. 

Josh Elm (Pittsburgh, Pa., Avonworth) had six tackles (5 solo) and 2.5 tackles for loss. He had the first two-sack game of his career. Kaden Crown (Lake Milton, Ohio, McDonald) finished with six tackles (6 solo), 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack. Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) added seven tackles (5 solo). Dayshawn Elliott (Kissimmee, Fla., Colonial) had an interception on Waynesburg's first possession of the game. He added three tackles (3 solo). It was Elliott's first career interception. 

Ben Pugh (Canfield, Ohio, Canfield) drilled a career long 36-yard field goal with 7:19 remaining in the third quarter. He connected on all of four of his point-after attempts. 

Westminster ran 59 offensive plays and finished with 316 yards of total offense, rushing for 181 yards and passing for 135. The Titans converted 5-of-9 third downs (.556) and limited the Yellow Jackets to 4-of-14 (.286). Westminster scored on all four of its trips to the red zone. 

Westminster will have its bye week next Saturday before the College's Homecoming and Reunion Weekend on Oct. 7. The Titans will host Bethany College at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium at 1 p.m.
