Titans fall in home opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's volleyball team dropped its home opener to visiting Allegheny College by a 3-1 final Thursday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Allegheny improved to 10-5 this season. Westminster fell to 7-5. After winning their first six matches to start the season, the Titans have dropped five of their last six.

Westminster jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the opening set and rolled to a 25-17 win. In the second, Westminster evened things up at 23-23 before surrendering the final two points and falling 25-23. Allegheny, up 12-9 in the third, rattled off seven-straight points before posting the 25-16 win. Down 22-18, Westminster registered back-to-back points to get to within two, 22-20. The Gators scored the final two points in the fourth and won 25-21.

Senior Saylee Grinnen (Wampum, Pa., Ellwood City) paced Westminster with eight kills on .571 hitting (8-0-14). She added four blocks and three digs. Sophomore Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) had five kills with a season-high 10 blocks, including six solo. Senior Natalie Franke (Centerville, Pa., Union City) had five kills and four blocks. Junior Ava Ferringer (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) totaled four kills, four blocks and three digs. 

Senior Reanna Daniels (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) and sophomore Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Ellwood City) each had 14 assists. 

Senior Malia Duffy (Allison Park, Pa., North Allegheny) registered a season-best 28 digs. Senior Claire Tobin (Battlecreek, Mich., Lakeview) added 14 digs. 

Emma Chambers led Allegheny with 11 kills. Dagney Javes and Sydney Kirk each had 10. 

Westminster will travel to Chatham University Saturday. The opening serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC).
