Westminster drops PAC opener

LATROBE, Pa.-- The Westminster College men's soccer team fell in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener Wednesday afternoon, losing at Saint Vincent College 2-1.

Saint Vincent improved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the PAC while Westminster fell to 3-2-3 overall and 0-1 in the league. Wednesday was Saint Vincent's first win over Westminster since a 2-1 overtime victory in New Wilmington on Oct. 12, 2009. The Titans had won 12 straight in the series before last year's 2-2 draw.

Graduate student Marc Esqueda (San Bruno, Calif., Junipero Serra) scored Westminster's only goal in the 20th minute.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, Saint Vincent's David Rahaman evened the match at 1-1 with a goal in the 83rd minute. Mattia Speretta's score in the 86th minute proved to be the game-winner.

Westminster outshot Saint Vincent 15-10 and had two more shots on goal (7-5). Westminster finished with a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Graduate student Jad Jadallah (Canfield, Ohio, Canfield) tallied three saves for Westminster.

Westminster will host Allegheny College in its PAC home opener Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the UPMC Sports Complex.
