Five named Academic All-District

GREENWOOD, Ind.--The Westminster College softball team had five players named to the 2022-23 Academic All-District® teams, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC), Tuesday afternoon.

Recent graduates Brooke Atkins (New Castle, Pa., Laurel)Mia Greco (New Castle, Pa. | Neshannock)Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel), Ashley Wire (Poland, Ohio | Poland Seminary) and
 Alexis Yates (Oakdale, Pa. | South Fayette) earned Academic All-District® honors.


Atkins, an outfielder, graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in PreK-4 Early Childhood Education/PreK-12 Special Education. She finished with a 3.65 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Atkins has been named to the College's Dean's List and the PAC's Academic Honor Roll. A three-time First Team All-PAC selection, she ranks second in the PAC in runs scored (41) and stolen bases (23), third in hits (64) and fourth in batting average (.438). Atkins is the program's all-time leader in hits (182), runs scored (135) and stolen bases (55). She hit at a .432 clip in 121 career games played, totaling 39 RBIs.

Greco, a second baseman, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in Biology. She carried a 3.95 cumulative GPA while participating in Westminster's All-College Honors Program. Greco is a seven-time Dean's List selection and three-time PAC Academic Honor Roll designee. She is a member of the Pi Sigma Pi honor fraternity and Tri-Beta, an academic fraternity of the biological sciences. Greco was recently named to the PAC's Sportsmanship Team for the second-straight year. She hit .245 with 11 runs scored in 40 games (40 starts) this season. 

A first baseman, Latess graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in PreK-4 Early Childhood Education/PreK-12 Special Education. She carried a 3.87 cumulative GPA, was a six-time Dean's List designee and two-time PAC Academic Honor Roll selection. Latess hit .433 in 42 games (42 starts) with 16 doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 60 RBIs and 29 runs scored. Her 60 RBIs and seven sacrifice flies both rank second in Division III. She earned First Team All-PAC three times and is the program's all-time leader in RBIs (152) and doubles (46). Latess' 20 career home runs are tied for the most in program history (Jennifer Emery, 2007-10).

Wire, an outfielder, graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry. She finished with a 3.70 cumulative GPA. A six-time Dean's List honoree and three-time PAC Academic Honor Roll selection, Wire was Academic All-District in 2022. She earned Second Team All-PAC this spring, the third all-conference citation of her career. She drew the most walks in the league (21) and was third in the PAC in RBIs (33). Wire's .483 on-base percentage ranked fourth in the conference while her 51 hits and 35 runs scored both ranks seventh. She hit .391 this season in 42 starts. Wire hit .429 with 86 RBIs and 92 runs scored in 113 career games played.

Yates, a shortstop, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in PreK-4 Early Childhood Education/PreK-12 Special Education. She finished with a 3.93 cumulative GPA and was a seven-time Dean's List designee and three-time PAC Academic Honor Roll selection. A three-time All-PAC selection, Yates earned First Team honors in 2022 and 2023. Her 44 runs scored this season are the most in the PAC while her 66 hits and 19 doubles rank second. The 66 hits are the 11th-most in Division III. Yates' .437 batting average is currently fifth-best in the league. She was second in the conference in assists (92) and double plays turned (9) this season. Yates hit .404 with 65 RBIs and 115 runs scored in 124 career games. 

The Academic All-District® teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 6. To be eligible for CSC Academic All-District® honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important contributor of at least sophomore athletic eligibility and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Student-athletes are nominated by their institution with voting for Academic All-America® conducted by athletic communication professionals from across the U.S.
