Titans split with Juniata

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team secured a doubleheader split with Juniata College Sunday afternoon. 

Westminster (3-2) picked up a 5-3 game one victory before falling to Juniata (2-3) 6-5 in game two. 

The Titans had nine hits in the game one win. Graduate student right fielder Seth Schrader (Fredonia, N.Y. | Fredonia) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while junior shortstop Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa. | Central Valley) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior left field Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa. | Blackhawk) was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Junior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa. | West Middlesex) had a base hit, an RBI and scored a run. Senior center fielder Brandon Cooper (Oakdale, Pa. | West Allegheny) was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored while sophomore third baseman Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa. | Shaler) went 1-for-3 with a run scored. 

Sophomore left-hander Jake Vitale (New Castle, Pa. | Union) moved to 1-1 on the season with the game one win. He allowed three runs (3 earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 5.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa. | Lincoln) earned the save after working two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out a pair. 

Trailing 2-1 after three innings, the Titans struck for four runs in the fourth to grab a 5-2 lead.

After Randza drilled a one-out triple to right, Tomko singled him home to even the score at 2-2. Campbell singled and Cooper walked to load the bases for Murgenovich, who delivered a two-out, two-run single to push Westminster's lead to 4-2 before Schrader's run-scoring single plated Cooper to extend the lead to 5-2. Juniata cut the lead to 5-3 with a run in the fifth. 

In game two, Westminster scored on back-to-back run-producing singles by junior first baseman Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City) and senior designated hitter Frankie Manios (Warren, Ohio | Howland) before Juniata tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth. The Eagles struck for three runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Westminster added a pair of runs in the sixth to cut Juniata's lead to 5-4 after Randza's base hit scored Schrader and junior second baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa. | Greater Latrobe) drilled a sacrifice fly to center that plated junior designated hitter Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y. | Allendale Columbia).

Juniata scratched out its sixth run in the eighth after scoring on a wild pitch. Trailing 6-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Cooper got things going with a base hit before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Murgenovich's single moved Cooper to third, and Schrader's sacrifice fly cut Juniata's lead to 6-5. 

Eight men had hits in game two. Randza went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Schrader was 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

Junior right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa. | Franklin) was saddled with the game two loss, allowing five runs (5 earned) on six hits with three walks and one strikeout in 3.2 innings.

Westminster will begin its seven-game stretch at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Sunday, March 12 against Ramapo College. The single game will be played at Lake Myrtle Sports Park (Field 1) in Auburndale, Florida.
