Titans drop season opener to Mount Union

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team dropped its 2023 season opener to the University of Mount Union Sunday afternoon by a score of 5-3.

Mount Union ran its season record to 3-0. 

Sophomore left-handed starter Jake Vitale (New Castle, Pa. | Union) took the loss after going 3.0 innings and allowing four runs (2 earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Junior right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa. | Franklin) threw 3.0 scoreless relief innings, striking out five. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa. | Lincoln) threw 3.0 relief innings and allowed one run (1 earned) on two hits with three strikeouts.

Leo Fornara earned the win (1-0) for Mount Union, allowing three runs (1 earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 6.0 innings. 

Five men had hits for Westminster. 

Junior first baseman Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City) reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks. Junior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa. | West Middlesex) went 1-for-3. He walked once and scored the Titans' first run of the game after leading off the bottom of the fifth with a double. 

Trailing 4-1 after five innings, Westminster plated a pair of runs in the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa. | Shaler) scored junior left fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa. | Blackhawk) with a sacrifice fly before senior center fielder Brandon Cooper (Oakdale, Pa. | West Allegheny) singled to right center, scoring junior second baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa. | Greater Latrobe) and cutting the deficit to 4-3. 

Joe Lenart smacked a two-out solo home run to left field in the top fo the seventh to push the Purple Raiders' lead to two, 5-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth Chinn walked and junior designated hitter Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y. | Allendale Columbia) was hit by a pitch, bringing the game-winning run to the plate. Mount Union reliever Cole Robinson entered the game and was able to get Randza to hit into a fielders choice and end the potential late-game rally. 

Westminster is scheduled to host Fredonia State Friday. The doubleheader is slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
