Westminster women fall in home opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse team opened its home schedule Wednesday night with a 16-8 loss to Marietta College at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster fell to 0-2 this season. Wednesday was Marietta's first game of the year. 

Freshman midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y. | Northport) paced the Titans with five points on three goals and a pair of assists. Senior midfielder Stephanie Cimini (Mars, Pa. | Mars) added three goals and caused a turnover. 

Junior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa. | Emmaus) and freshman midfielder Emma Lafayette (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) each scored goals. Reed had four ground balls while junior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa. | Somerset) caused a pair of turnovers. 

Senior Jaden Domaratz (Springdale, Pa., Springdale) and sophomore Jade Hromanik (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Shaler) combined to make 16 saves. Domaratz totaled six first half saves while Hromanik had 10 saves in the second half. 

Hope Adams scored four times to lead Marietta while adding three ground balls and a caused turnover. 

Cimini scored her first goal of the season two minutes into the first period to put the Titans in front 1-0. Marietta closed out the first with five-straight goals to lead 5-1 heading into the second period. 

Megan McGriff scored twice in the second half to help the Pioneers carry a 7-2 lead into halftime. 

Marietta opened the third scoring four-straight goals to go up by nine, 11-2, with just under six minutes remaining in the period. Cimini scored with less than two minutes remaining in the third to cut the Titans' deficit to eight, 12-4. 

Trailing 15-5 five minutes into the fourth, Brazier scored a pair of goals in a 22-second span. Cimini closed out the scoring with a free position goal with just under a minute left in regulation. 

Marietta outshot Westminster 41-25 and held a 20-11 edge in ground balls. 

Westminster will host The College of Wooster next Wednesday. The opening draw is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
