Westminster men fall on Senior Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered a 79-71 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to visiting Thiel College Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster fell to 14-11 overall and 12-8 in league play. Thiel improved to 12-11 overall and 11-9 in the PAC. 

Junior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio | West Branch) finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead Westminster. Freshman Bobby Ray (Jefferson, Ohio | Jefferson) added 15 points and three rebounds while senior Tyler James (Youngstown, Ohio | Warren JFK) chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocked shots. 

Marlon Ellerbee led five Thiel players in double figures with 21 points. He added eight rebounds and two steals. 

James, Jordan Zupko (Mineral Ridge, Ohio | Mineral Ridge)Austin O'Hara (Girard, Ohio | Girard)Justin Bofenkamp (Warren, Ohio | Warren JFK) and student assistant coach Tommy Howell were honored before Saturday's tipoff. 

Ray staked Westminster to an early 4-3 lead on a layup with just over three minutes played in the first half, but Thiel strung together a 11-0 scoring run over the next three and a half minutes to go up by 10, 14-4, with 13:32 left in the half. Another 11-0 Tomcat run pushed the visitor's lead to 21, 36-15, with just over six minutes to go in the first. Thiel carried a 40-24 lead into the break. 

The Tomcats shot 46.9 percent (15-32) from the floor and made 5-of-10 (50.0%) three-point tries in the first half. Ellerbee totaled 13 points and five rebounds in the game's first 20 minutes. 

Ray's jumper with 13:11 left in the second capped a Westminster 11-4 run and pulled the Titans to within three, 48-45. A Thiel 10-0 run stretched its lead to 13, 58-45, with 10:30 remaining. Ray drilled a three-pointer with just under a minute to go in regulation to cut the deficit to seven, 76-69, but the Tomcats held on down the stretch to secure the eight-point win. 

Thiel converted 31-of-39 (79.5%) free throws in the game. The Tomcats went 26-of-30 (86.7%) from the line in the second half. 

Westminster outscored Thiel 36-18 in the paint. Both teams finished with 42 rebounds. 

Following Saturday's loss Westminster will be the No. 5 seed in the PAC Championship Tournament. Tuesday, the Titans will travel to Chatham University's Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC) for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal matchup with the No. 4 Cougars.
