Westminster outlasts Penn State Greater Allegheny

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team earned an 89-80 non-conference victory over visiting Penn State Greater Allegheny Monday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster ran its season record to 4-4. The loss snapped a five-game win streak for Penn State Greater Allegheny, which fell to 6-3. 

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) paced Westminster with a game-high 21 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field. He added six rebounds and three steals. Monday was Jones' third game this season scoring 20 or more points. Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) finished with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double. It was his first double-double of the year. Clark's 19 points were a season high. Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) scored a season-high 18 points to go along with six assists and a pair of rebounds. Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

Four players scored in double figures for Penn State Greater Allegheny. Jeremiah Miller posted a 21-point, 14-rebound double-double. Bryce Phillips added 20 points and eight rebounds. 

Sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) stretched Westminster's first half lead to 13, 21-8, with a bucket at the 13:44 mark, capping a 12-4 scoring run. Clark extended the Titans' lead to 12, 39-27, with 4:23 remaining in the half, but Penn State Greater Allegheny outscored Westminster 12-0 over the final 12 minutes to even the game at 39-39 heading into the break. Phillips had eight points during the Lions' scoring run and finished with 14 first half points. 

Westminster, fueled by an 8-0 run to begin the second, went up by eight, 47-39, two minutes into the half. Hendershott and Jones had four apiece during the run. Sophomore Alex Rothwell (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) stretched the Titans' lead to 13, 70-57, with under 10 minutes to play.

Christopher Killings' layup with just over three minutes left in regulation trimmed Westminster's lead down to eight, 81-73. After Clark pushed the lead to 10, 83-73, with 2:23 to go, the Titans managed to convert 6-of-9 free throws down the stretch to secure the nine-point win. 

Westminster scored 25 points off of 19 Penn State Greater Allegheny turnovers. The Titans finished shooting 44.0 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from three-point range. Westminster's seven made three-pointers tied its season high. The Titans finished with a 50-44 edge on the glass. 

Westminster hosts Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Allegheny College Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
