Westminster women fall at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 72-52 non-conference loss Saturday afternoon at John Carroll University. 

John Carroll improved to 7-4 overall and 6-1 at the DeCarlo Varsity Center. Westminster fell to 7-5 this season. 

Fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) scored a team-high 15 points for Westminster. She added five rebounds and a steal. Junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) and senior Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, Maine, Greely) had seven points and four rebounds apiece. Graduate student Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) finished with four points, four rebounds and seven assists. Fifth-year Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio, Ursuline) totaled four points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Maddie Pietrowski led three John Carroll players in double figures with 19 points, three rebounds, six assists and four steals. 

Senior Mariah Vincent (Franklin, Pa., Kennedy Catholic) split a pair of free throws with under one minute left in the first to cut the Blue Streaks' lead to 12-10 heading into the second. 

Bella Carcioppolo knocked down a three-pointer with under three minutes to go in the second that gave John Carroll a 27-16 lead. Westminster's 7-0 run to end the half cut John Carroll's lead to four, 27-23. Fitzpatrick scored five of the Titans' final seven points of the half.

Angela Vitantonio stretched John Carroll's lead to 16, 51-35, on a layup with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Blue Streaks went into the fourth up 11, 54-43. John Carroll outscored Westminster 18-9 in the fourth, thanks to an early 6-0 scoring run.

John Carroll scored 19 points off of 15 Westminster turnovers. Westminster finished with an advantage in bench points, 21-11, and second chance points, 15-9. 

Westminster shot 31.7 percent (20-63) from the floor and 64.7 percent (11-17) from the free throw line. John Carroll outrebounded Westminster 35-34. 

Westminster returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday, Jan. 3. Tipoff at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is slated for 6 p.m.
