DePietro and Jones post double-doubles, Titans beat Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Sophomores Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) and Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) both recorded double-double efforts for the Westminster College men's basketball team in a 77-69 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Thiel College Saturday afternoon. 

Westminster pushed its record to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the PAC, while Thiel fell to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the league. 

DePietro finished with a 29-point, 10-rebound double-double. The 29 points are a career best. He finished 6-of-8 from the field and went 17-of-20 from the free throw line. DePietro's 17 made free throws are tied for the fourth-most among Division III players this season and rank as the third-most in program history. He added three blocked shots.

Jones went for 16 points and 10 rebounds, connecting on 8-of-13 field goal attempts. It was his second double-double this season. Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) added 11 points, two rebounds a pair of steals. Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) totaled eight points, six rebounds, four blocks and two steals. 

Leone connected on a pair of free throws following the first half, four-minute media timeout to extend the lead to four, 31-27. Jones scored on a second-chance bucket with under 30 seconds to play to stretch the lead to five, 35-30. Westminster went into the half up 35-31. DePietro scored 11 of his 29 points in the first half. Jones had eight points and nine boards in the game's first 20 minutes.

Westminster opened the second half on an 8-1 scoring run, going up 11, 45-34, with just under 17 minutes left. Jones had four points during the spurt. Westminster went up 68-57 on Leone's three-pointer with just over five minutes to go before Elijah Harden capped a Tomcat 11-0 run with a pair of made free throws that evened the game at 68-68 with 1:31 left in regulation. 

The Titans responded with a 7-0 spurt that covered the next minute, with sophomore Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) knocking down a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to play. Marlon Ellerbee split a pair of free throws with 22 seconds to go that cut the Thiel deficit to six, 75-69, before DePietro hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left. 

Harden led three Thiel players in double figures with 15 points. Barnes added 13 while Rayshod Hooper chipped in with 10. 

Westminster shot 49.0 percent (25-51) from the field and went 25-of-36 (.694) from the free throw line. Thiel outrebounded Westminster 51-40, including a 24-6 advantage on the offensive glass.

Westminster hosts Penn State Greater Allegheny Monday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
