Westminster falls at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered a 117-45 loss to Youngstown State University Monday night at the Beeghly Center.

YSU moved to 9-3 overall and is now 6-0 at home. Westminster fell to 6-6. 

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) paced Westminster with eight points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) and freshman Skevos Kouros (Youngstown, Ohio, Campbell) had six points apiece. Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) finished with a team-best eight rebounds. 

EJ Farmer led six Youngstown State players in double figures with 20 points. 

Clark's jumper with just under 16 minutes to go in the first pulled Westminster to within one, 7-6. Farmer's three-pointer with 13:07 remaining capped a 10-0 YSU run that pushed its lead to 17-6 before another 10-0 run midway through the half extended YSU's lead to 24, 35-11. The Penguins closed out the half by outscoring the Titans 8-0 and went into the break leading 58-24. 

Jones scored four-straight points to open the second before a 9-0 YSU scoring run stretched its lead to 39, 67-28, with 4:20 elapsed in the half. Fueled by a 13-0 run midway through the second the Penguins ran their lead to 87-32. YSU outscored Westminster 59-21 in the second half. 

Westminster shot 24.6 percent (17-69) from the floor and went 2-of-21 (.095) from three-point field goal range. YSU shot 55.6 percent (45-81) and converted 13 of its 36 (.361) three-point field goal tries. The Penguins were plus-22 (55-33) on the boards and outscored the Titans 60-18 in the paint. 

Westminster will host Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Geneva College Wednesday, Jan. 3. Tipoff at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 8 p.m.
