Westminster opens league slate with loss at defending PAC champion W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Wednesday night with a 77-50 loss to Washington & Jefferson at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

W&J, last year's conference champion, improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the PAC. Westminster fell to to 1-2 and 0-1 in the conference. 

The Presidents led 35-18 at the half. The Titans shot just 25.0 percent from the field through the first two quarters. W&J registered a 26-16 first half advantage on the boards, including seven offensive rebounds, and had a 16-2 edge in points in the paint. 

Senior Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, Maine, Greely) split a pair of free throws with six and a half minutes left in the second quarter to cut W&J's lead to seven, 21-14. The Presidents, fueled by a 9-0 run, went up 30-14 with under four minutes left in the half and carried a 17-point lead into the break. 

Westminster scored the first seven points of the second half to cut the deficit to 10, 35-25. Fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) had five points during the run. W&J closed the quarter outscoring Westminster 14-4 and went into the fourth up 59-33. 

Murrio paced Westminster with 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. She had nine of the Titans' 18 first half points. Sophomore Gracie Schill (Rootstown, Ohio, Akron Hoban) added eight points while senior Caitlyn Condoleon (Warren, Ohio, Warren JFK) chipped in with seven points. Fifth-year Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio, Ursuline) totaled six points and seven rebounds. 


Bryn Bezjak led three W&J players in double figures with 20 points and four boards.

W&J shot 44.1 percent from the floor in the win and knocked down 10-of-19 (.526) of its three-point tries. Westminster went 3-of-15 (.200) from three-point range. The Presidents outrebounded Westminster 51-29.

Westminster travels to Saint Vincent Saturday. Tipoff inside the Robert S. Carey Student Center is scheduled for 4 p.m.
