Productive first half guides Westminster to win over Allegheny

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College football team held visiting Allegheny scoreless in the second half of Saturday night's 27-17 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium.

Westminster pushed its season record to 4-3 while Allegheny fell to 2-6. 

Fifth-year Ryan Gomes (Tampa, Fla., Walter L. Sickles) piled up 181 yards of total offense and scored a pair of touchdowns. He rushed 26 times for 106 yards, scoring from 13 yards out with just over one minute to go in the first quarter that propelled the Titans to a 17-7 lead. Gomes caught two passes for 75 yards, including a 15-yard strike from sophomore Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) with under five to go in the second quarter that pushed Westminster's lead to 10, 24-14.

Gomes hauled in a career-long 60-yard pass late in the third quarter that set up a career-long 36-yard field goal by sophomore Ben Pugh (Canfield, Ohio, Canfield) five seconds into the fourth.

Saturday was the ninth time Gomes has rush for 100 or more yards in his career. 

McGowan completed 8-of-14 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Jalen Royal-Eiland (Youngstown, Ohio, Mineral Ridge) snagged four catches for 69 yard and a touchdown. His score came after Pugh's first quarter 35-yard field goal and fumble by Allegheny on the ensuing kickoff. Freshman Christian Snyder (West Middlesex, Pa., West Middlesex) caused the fumble by Ian Durci, which was recovered by senior Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) at the Gators' 25-yard line. Royal-Eiland scored on the first play from scrimmage following the fumble.

Sophomore Dylan Sleva (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) finished with nine tackles (5 solo) and an interception. It was his second interception of the season. Junior Kevin Wright (West Palm Beach, Fla., Seminole Ridge) had six tackles (6 solo) while Randza finished with six tackles (6 solo), a sack and a fumble recovery. Junior Walt Phillips (Pembroke Pines, Fla., Champagnat Catholic) added five tackles (4 solo), 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack. Junior Brice Butler (Farrell, Pa., Farrell) had three tackles (2 solo) and grabbed his first interception of the year. It was his 12th career interception. 

Westminster was terrific in the red zone, scoring on four of its five chances. The Titans finished with 308 yards of total offense (145 rush, 163 pass). 

Allegheny's Jack Johnson completed 27-of-49 passes for 265 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Kyrie Miller finished with 13 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown. Declan O'Brien was held to one catch for six yards. He entered the game ranked second in Division III in receptions per game (10.6) and third in receiving yards (986). His 140.9 receiving yards per game average was fourth in Division III.

Westminster will travel to Saint Vincent next Saturday. Kickoff at Chuck Noll Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
