Westminster hangs on for road win at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa.--Westminster College fifth-year running back Ryan Gomes (Tampa, Fla., Walter L. Sickles) churned out 120 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns during Saturday afternoon's 22-20 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Saint Vincent at Chuck Noll Field.

Westminster ran its record to 5-3 while Saint Vincent fell to 2-6. The Titans are now 7-1 all-time in Latrobe.

Gomes finished with a career-high 33 carries and also hauled in two catches for 20 yards. He has rushed for 100 or more yards 10 times in his career, including four times this year. Gomes now has 20 career rushing touchdowns.

Scoreless after one quarter, Westminster senior Daniel Thimons (Tarentum, Pa., Highlands) and sophomore Dylan Sleva (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) combined to drop Saint Vincent quarterback Austin Slye for a 10-yard loss and safety with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half. On Westminster's ensuing possession, Gomes capped a seven-play, 64-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run with under nine to go in the half to give the Titans a 9-0 lead.

The Titans and Bearcats traded scores in the third. Sophomore Jalen Royal-Eiland (Youngstown, Ohio, Mineral Ridge) caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from junior Billy Levak (Macedonia, Ohio, Nordonia) 36 seconds into the second half, and following a failed two-point conversion, Westminster led 15-0. The Royal-Eiland score came after junior Corte Williams (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) intercepted Slye on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. Two plays into the next Saint Vincent drive, sophomore Mason Manos (New Castle, Pa., Neshannock) forced a Ty Martin fumble that was recovered by Sleva at the Bearcats' 23-yard line. Gomes scored from four yards out with 10:43 to go in the third to push Westminster's lead to 22-0.

Max Pisula scored from two yards out with eight minutes to play in the third and from six yards out with just over six to go in the quarter, cutting the Titans' lead to eight, 22-14, heading into the fourth quarter. After the Saint Vincent defense forced a turnover on downs at their own 24-yard line to begin the period, the Bearcats used a 49-yard pitch-and-catch from Slye to Kaelib McElroy to trim Westminster's lead to two, 22-20. Williams snuffed out a conversion attempt on a throw from McElroy to Slye in the end zone that squelched the rally.

After an exchange of punts, a 36-yard kick by freshman Craig Sonson Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa., Montour) pinned Saint Vincent back to their own 13-yard line with under a minute left in regulation. Junior Kevin Wright (West Palm Beach, Fla., Seminole Ridge) shut the door after intercepting Slye with 30 seconds left. It was Wright's first interception of the season.

Levak connected on15-of-24 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. He completed passes to six different receivers. Sophomore Taite Beachy (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) caught five passes for 49 yards.

Westminster scored on all three of its chances in the red area Saturday and converted 6-of-14 third downs.

Sleva totaled 11 tackles (8 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, a half sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. It was his fourth game this season with 10 or more tackles. Senior Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) finished with eight tackles (6 solo) while junior Walt Phillips (Pembroke Pines, Fla., Champagnat Catholic) had six tackles (3 solo) and a tackle for loss.

The Titans finished with 8.0 tackles for loss.

McElroy caught five passes for 107 yards for Saint Vincent. Wiley Purry led the Bearcats with 11 tackles.

Westminster will host Carnegie Mellon next Saturday. Kickoff at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
