Westminster hangs on for PAC win over Geneva

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College junior Mackenzie Avery (Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) scored in the 68th minute to help the women's soccer team secure a 2-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Geneva Wednesday evening at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Westminster improved to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the league. It was the program's 12th-straight win over Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes fell to 4-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the PAC.

Junior Sophia Galietta (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) scored in the second minute off of an assist from junior Mackenzie Powell (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. It was Galietta's second goal this season. The assist was Powell's third of the year. 

Geneva's Saige Musser evened the match in the eighth minute with an unassisted goal. 

Avery's game-winner was the first goal of her career. 

Sophomore Morgan Murphy (Yardley, Pa., Villa Joseph Marie) finished with seven saves. 

Westminster outshot Geneva 20-12 and had a 14-8 edge in shots on goal. The Titans took eight corner kicks while the Golden Tornadoes took one.

Westminster hosts Waynesburg for Senior Day Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
