Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ed Farrell

Benefitting from team bonding, balanced Westminster women jolt Geneva, 78-63

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team took a holiday trip to Florida for some non-conference competition and some team-building camaraderie, and it appears the bonding was beneficial.

Paced by a quintet of double-digit scorers, the Titans toppled Geneva, 78-63, Tuesday night to commence the Presidents' Athletic Conference 2023 portion of the campaign.

Senior Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio | Ursuline) boasted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double for Westminster (5-2 PAC, 9-3 overall). Boosting Bell was sophomore Mackenzie Powell (Harrison City, Pa. | Penn-Trafford) with a dozen points, while senior Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio | Cardinal Mooney) junior Caitlyn Condoleon (Warren, Ohio | Warren JFK) and first-year standout Kyla Servick (Wampum, Pa. | Ellwood) evenly divided an additional 33 points. Junior Mariah Vincent (Franklin, Pa. | Kennedy Catholic) narrowly missed double digits as she contributed a trio of triples for the Titans.

Regarding that balanced offense, Titans' taskmaster Rosanne Scott said from Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium, "In Florida, that's when it started. Our bench started to get more confident and it's continued, and we're really happy to see that – we need them.

"And they stepped up. When Cam was out they came in and filled that role and they've gotten a lot more confident," Scott added.

It was a wire-to-wire win for Westminster: 21-14 at the quarter, 43-27 by the break – on Condoleon's triple at the buzzer – and 59-45 through three quarters.

The Titans turned over the ball 22 times – compared with 17 for Geneva – but compensated by distributing 21 assists on their 33 field goals, connecting on 45.8% of their floor shots. Hergenrother dished out a game-high 9 dimes and Bell added 4. Hergenrother also was credited with 4 steals.

"We didn't take good shots – we took great shots," Scott assessed. "We preach all the time to make that extra pass, and they did a good job of that. Twenty-one assists, that's great."

Westminster was dominant, outscoring the Golden Tornadoes, 50-32 from the paint, 16-6 on second-chance buckets, and 27-20 courtesy of its depth.

Geneva (2-5, 2-8) was led in scoring by former Ellwood City High star Izzy Roth, who recorded 15 points, including a trio of treys. Also, Mia San Nicolas forged 14 points, while Cynthia Stewart split 24 additional points with Taylor Haring.

But the Golden Tornadoes tallied just 25 of 76 field-goal attempts (32.9%), including 7 of 32 (21.9%) from 3-point range.

Led by Bell's boardwork, complemented by Servick and Condoleon who split another dozen, Westminster won the board battle, 43-40.

Westminster split its pair of games in the Sunshine State, and Scott observed, "We played two great teams, and for the girls it was good bonding. We got to hang out. It was more than just basketball, and it's always nice to be in the Sunshine State."

Westminster will travel to Pittsburgh on Thursday for a 7 p.m. PAC contest with Chatham University.

"This week's' going to be key. We have three games this week. Chatham is a great team that's been playing really well," Scott summarized. "But we'll take it one game at a time. You never know what's going to happen on a given night, so we've got to control what we can control.

"We're definitely comfortable with where we're at, but," Scott emphasized, "we have room to improve. But I'm comfortable with how confident they are and how well they're playing, and they're starting to come together."
