Westminster men nipped at home

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team dropped a 73-58 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) decision to Saint Vincent College Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Westminster fell to 11-7 overall and 9-4 in league play. It was the first home loss of the year for the Titans (8-1). Westminster had won four straight against Saint Vincent. 

Saint Vincent, winners of four straight, moved to 11-7 overall and 7-6 in the PAC. 

Junior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio | Springfield Local) paced Westminster with a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. It was his third double-double of the season. Clark added four blocked shots. Senior Tyler James (Youngstown, Ohio | Warren JFK) added 12 points and four rebounds. Senior Justin Bofenkamp (Warren, Ohio | Warren JFK) had nine points, two rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. 

Five players scored in double figures for Saint Vincent. Osyon Jones and Mike Iuzzolino each had 16 points. Jaden Gales registered a 14-point, 11-rebound double while Shemar Bennett posted a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. 

Saint Vincent scored the game's first five points before Westminster responded with a 17-6 scoring sport to take a six-point lead, 17-11, on a Bofenkamp jumper at the 10:17 mark of the first half. A pair of James free throws broke a 32-32 tie with half a minute to play in the first, giving the Titans a 34-32 edge going into the break. 

Westminster stretched its lead to five, 41-36, five minutes into the second half on a James' layup. Saint Vincent put together a 21-4 run over the next seven-plus minutes to go up by 12, 57-45. 

The Titans whittled the Bearcat lead down to seven, 63-56, with under five to go in regulation, but the Bearcats hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to secure the 15-point conference win. 

Westminster held a 39-37 rebounding advantage. Saint Vincent turned 17 Westminster turnovers into 20 points. 

Saint Vincent finished shooting 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor and held Westminster to 22-of-65 (33.8%) shooting. The Bearcats connected on 26-of-34 (76.5%) free throw attempts. The Titans were 13-of-18 (72.2%) from the line. 

Westminster will travel to Grove City College on Saturday, January 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
